Make no mistake. This show is a winner.

Make no mistake. This show is a winner.

Have you ever wanted to watch a show that is little more than a horror movie cliche? Are you entertained by the fact that you’re going to look forward to seeing half of the cast of a movie die in hilarious ways? Are you looking for something that is not to be taken seriously at all? If so, have I got a show for you.

It’s called Scream Queens, and it’s a horror lover’s treat.

The Characters

Die, cast, die!

Die, cast, die!

Our main characters in this campy splatter-fest are undoubtedly Grace Gardner (Skyler Samuels) and Pete Martinez (Diego Boneta). These two are college students that are investigating the Kappa Kappa Tau sorority after a series of unexplained murders break out that are orchestrated by the Red Devil. Now, you may think that sounds like a serious story, but let’s face it, it’s not.

It’s a great excuse to kill a cast of the most douche-baggy horror caricatures ever assembled on television, whether it be Chad Radwell (Glen Powell), the Chanels, or their obnoxious frat-bro counterparts. They all do a really good job at portraying the colorful cast of characters, capping off the cavalcade of awesome with Jamie Lee Curtis as one horny college dean.

The Humor

Not you, Grace. I like you.

Not you, Grace. I like you.

I was laughing or chuckling at all of the horror movie silliness from beginning to end. Ryan Murphy and the writers did a good job at making sure that this show has an absurdly happy tone throughout, even through the most bizarre killings imaginable. One particular highlight involves a lawnmower and some of the new rushers of KKT stuck with their bodies in the ground. I won’t spoil it, but the end result certainly made me laugh.

On top of that, you have the surprise of some of the most pitch-black and non-PC dialogue I’ve ever heard on network television. This show seems to take no prisoners by making fun of self-involved women, frat bros, Taylor Swift, the deaf, and many more. It’s a lot of fun to watch and I hope that the writers will continue to add more absurdist and offensive humor in the episodes to come.

The Plot

It’s a slasher flick mixed with a series of mid-90s flashbacks. What more could you ask for in a silly and wildly entertaining show?

The Flaws

Mwahahahahahahahahahaha!

Mwahahahahahahahahahaha!

The show seemed to be working up a big mystery as to who the Red Devil is, but the sudden reveal at the end of the second hour distracted a bit from it for me. Also, it is hard to tell whether or not the killer is concocting a frame job on some of our cast members or if they are going with the trope of deliberately pointing out the killer to make the show dangerously cheesy.

Also, I’m not sure whether the certain actors and actresses can act in this show, but maybe that’s just a part of the show’s cheesy absurdist charm. Ariana Grande’s performance is one example where you have no idea if you should jeer at it or laugh your head off.

Conclusion

Scream Queens is a winner. I will be tuning in next week.
